ARE YOUR FRIENDS KEEPING YOU FAT?

Are your friends keeping you fat?

This is a very serious question to ask yourself when you are working towards discovering the weight you were born to be. One of my clients was recently telling me about some of her friends who pass very negative comments when she looses weight. In the coaching session we discussed how and why these people act this way.

Love Yourself Thin
The reality is that when you make changes to your life, weight and size some people are not happy about it. Sadly, there are those who are jealous. Then there are those who are frightened that they may lose their relationship with you when you change, because others may find you attractive.

My client was astounded at the comment passed by her friend when she challenged the negativity. Her friend said "Well there has to be someone in the group who is fat so that we can feel good about ourselves!"

It is so easy to let this type of person throw us straight back into our comfort eating to bury the very understandable emotions experienced by such a comment. That's the whole point of such a statement. It is subtally manipulative, especially as it is human nature to want to fit or be loved. However, by holding our personal power, challenging such negativity and continuing on our loving pathway to change, we may risk losing friendships and even loved ones.

Self-love is not just about making positive changes in what we chose to eat, it is also about loving ourselves enough to challenge hurtful and negative behavious that impact on us. I was so proud of my client because she held her personal power and told her friend that she really did not like what she had said. By doing this it opened up the opportunity for the other person to learn about being kind, loving and supportive.

This is what I call a 'wake up call' as it offers the other person a chance to understand you from a place of love, not jealousy or fear. It helps them understand that you are serious about your self-loving changes and offers you an opportunity to assess if the relationship is a sound and loving one. By doing this you see the person behind the mask.

When we begin to love ourselves deeply we attract into our lives those people who are also able to love us as we deserve. This may mean that we need to move away from those who do not learn anything from our appropriate challenges to their negativity. Alternatively, we may need to work hard at relationships, we do not want to lose. This is done by lovingly dispelling their fears of losing us.

The great thing about creating an amazing love affair with ourselves is the pathway of learning that is opened up to us.

Enjoy developing your love.

WHAT THE DIET INDUSTRY DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW!

Have you ever wondered why diets don’t work for you? Did you know that 98% of dieters regain their weight with 2 years - plus more in most cases? Only 100th of 1% of those who do lose weight keep it off for over 10 years!

These are the statistics that the diet industry does not want you to know. Also, here are some facts they don't want us to know either:

Demonising Food Makes You Fat!
Even with the shift towards healthy eating plans the figures have not improved. Why is this? I believe that one answer is really quite simple – our mind is set to a mode of ‘scarcity’ thinking!

When we listen to and take on board all the negative messages from a diet culture that has us believing food is either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ we make it scarce in our lives when trying to be 'good'.

What rubbish! By demonising and making food scarce in this way it is inevitable that you will crave it at some stage in the future. After all, isn’t it human nature to want what we believe we cannot or should not have?

It's Not About Having No Willpower!
In fact, you probably put yourself into a mindset equivalent of someone who really lives with starvation, and then wonder where your will power goes when there is an abundance of food! Then, of course, we make things worse by beating ourselves up for not having the willpower to stick to our ‘good’ food regime. And where does this critical, self-judging mindset lead us? Straight back into our comfort eating, of course!

Willpower is Not The Issue, Food Addiction Is!
The final thing that the diet industry do not tell us is that, not only are we in a mental trap, for some of us we are addicted to certain food especially sugar and refined flour. For those of us with addictive personalities, which you are born this way and cannot change it, the reactions in our bodies cause us to crave more and more of the foods that spike our insulin. Worse still is that fact that insulin enhances fat retention rather than reduction and sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine!

Sugar is in Almost all Conveniene Foods Including Diet Foods!
With 80% of the foods on our supermarket shelves and most convenience foods, containing sugar, it's time to get back to good old home cooking from scratch. What is even worse is that diet foods usually contain sugar to enhance their flavour! So we are now hooked on diet foods. It's no wonder we can't lose weight permanently.

All Foods Are Good, Only Your Body Can Tell You Which Ones Suit Your Body Best!
So, the way to increase your motivation is to see food in its proper role, as a fuel on which our bodies live and thrive; to see ALL food as ‘good’ without fearing it or battling with it every day. By determining exactly what foods make up your ideal fuel recipe.

The final key is the one I believe we are also missing - developing a love affair with ourselves and asking our inner guide what fuel we actually want. By giving ourselves choices, whilst focussing on the energising and healing effect of the foods that fuel us best it is far easier to lose weight. The battle with food has been conquered because it is no longer your focus, love is.

A COMFORT EATERS DAYBREAK ROUTINE

I have been thinking recently about how important the start of the day is. It has an impact on our thoughts and actions during the following hours. For this reason it is important to start well. So, what do I mean by this?

It is all too easy to get out of bed when the alarm goes off and throw ourselves into the day. However, have you ever noticed that if your head is full of stressful thoughts and negativity, from the very start, your day does not usually pan out too well? In all the rush of breakfast time do you reach out for food that is comforting or quick and easy? This is what happens when we do not set our mind and body in the right mode for the day.

Without a self-loving routine we fail to switch our minds onto our bodies, we allow our minds to be ruminating with negative and self-critical thoughts and we have not tapped into an amazing energy source that will sustain us even on our busiest days.

The fact is that by rolling out of bed, straight into the daily activity, your stress levels are most likely to roll over from the day before. And what does this lead to? Comfort eating! So how can you make sure you day starts well and has an amazingly positive impact on the day?

  • Give yourself some ‘Me Time’. This is time to be alone, at the start of the day, and get your mind and body ready to meet whatever it brings.

  • If you have no time to fit this in, first thing, then make the time by getting up half an hour or an hour earlier. You deserve this special time to start the day right.
  • Switch your mind onto your body by mindfully doing exercise, breathing and stretching. (I do yoga because I love it). Whatever you do make it a routine that you concentrate on. When your mind wanders bring it back to feeling the movements of your body. Fifteen minutes is all you need.
  • Following the exercise, sit somewhere comfortable and quiet. Sit upright with your back straight and unsupported (a chair is OK if you are not comfortable on the floor). Concentrate on your inward and outward breaths. When thoughts come into your mind just let them go without self-criticism and return your focus onto your breathing. Fifteen minutes is all you need.

  • Finally count your blessings. List in your mind all the wonderful people and experiences in your life and give thanks for each one. Think of the day ahead and see it working out wonderfully and give thanks for all it is going to bring to you.

Now you are ready for the day, less stressed, more in touch with your body and its signals of what and how much to eat and filled with joy. What a self-loving way to start every day.
