WHAT TO EAT TO RAISE YOUR HAPPINESS LEVELS

Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to lose weight or eat the foods that suit you, when you are happy? Along with maintaining your happiness through a positive mental attitude, you can actually stimulate it through the food you eat. Yes, that’s right you can really eat to be happy!

It is all down to the foods you eat and their effect on the chemical reactions in your brain. Serotonin is a brain chemical, a type of messenger, that operates between nerve cells. It is aided in its use in the brain by vital fats from fish oils, cold-pressed flax and walnut oil. As a natural anti-depressant it can also reduces craving and comfort eating.

So where does this serotonin come from? Well, we make it in our body from an amino acid called tryptophan. Just think of the foods that give you a fast ‘quick fix’ high. The foods that offer this limited ‘quick fix’ serotonin effect include sweets, confectionary, crisps, white bread, white rice, alcohol and other processed foods.

These particular amino acid rich foods have a quick release but short-term effect on the body. All, however, perpetuate your cravings when the initial serotonin ‘high’ dissipates. That makes them foods that increase your cravings as the tryptophan levels suddenly decrease. This is one reason why, when your brain is lacking in serotonin, you reach out for these tryptophan ‘quick fix’ foods as a comforter. There is no doubt that they do give you the desired boost of serotonin but it is temporary and therefore you are more likely to eat inappropriately.

By eating foods that steadily release tryptophan, the ones that don't give you a quick serotonin fix, you can naturally boost your long-term levels of serotonin. This in turn reduces your food cravings and raises your happiness levels. How great is that!

Maintaining correct levels of tryptophan is critical in balancing your moods and behaviour. It heals the unhappiness or depression that leads you back into inappropriate eating habits. In addition these ‘slow release’ tryptophan foods give you a long-term sense of well being. If levels in your body are normal, you won't crave or feel the need to overeat sugary and refined carbohydrate foods. Steady, long-term releasing tryptophan is found mainly in…
ü  Turkey;
ü  Chicken;
ü  Fish;
ü  Pheasant;
ü  Partridge;
ü  Cottage cheese;
ü  Bananas;
ü  Eggs;
ü  Nuts;
ü  Wheat germ;
ü  Avocados;
ü  Milk;
ü  Cheese;
ü  Legumes (peas, beans, pulses, soya);
ü  In smaller amounts in potatoes, wholegrain breads, cereals, and brown rice.

Eating a balanced diet that includes some of these foods can help raise your happiness motivators. With other amino acids competing with tryptophan to be absorbed into the body, it is helpful to raise insulin levels moderately. This can be achieved by eating small amounts of starchy foods such as brown rice, wholemeal bread, porridge oats and jacket potatoes, alongside protein foods. Sunlight is also essential for the development of serotonin in our bodies.

As a messenger in the brain, serotonin also needs healthy receptors in order for messages to be transmitted effectively. These chemical receptors are built principally from vital fats found mainly in oily fish (such as mackerel, salmon, tuna, herrings and sardine), fish oil supplements, cold-pressed flax and walnut oil.

Depression and negative moods can be significantly improved by daily introductions of these fats, along with slow releasing tryptophan rich foods, over a three to four month period. How's that for a great solution to healing your cravings and overeating. Eat your way to happiness and the weight you were born to be!

The Truth About Sugar - A Sweet Addiction

At last research and science is proving that those of us with a food and weight issue are NOT LACKING IN WILLPOWER.  How many years have I beat myself up for not being, 'Good Enough' strong enough and consistent enough to lose weight permanently? Decades!

The convenience food industry have a lot to answer for and below is a video highlighting the science behind our addiction to sugar and our perceived lack of willpower. When we eat refined sugars and flour (present in most convenience foods) it causes the release of dopamine, a chemical that plays a major part in reward-motivated behaviour, giving us a 'food high' and a craving for more.

This is because, as with all addictive substances (including tabacco, alcohol and drugs), these addictive foods release high levels of dopamine into our body. The problem with this is that the dopamine receptors become overloaded and begin to work less effectively. In turn this means that to gain the same level of enjoyment, more of the addictive substance/food is required to feel the same level of reward.We are hooked into a cycle of craving and eating that only escalates if you have an addictive peronality. (For more details and to take a 'Susceptibility' Test see Susan Pierce Thompson's videos.

Don't give up though as there is great news. By cutting out refined sugar and flour from your diet for just 2-3 weeks the damage to the dopamine receptors is reversed. This means that your cravings are controlled and your battle with food, a thing of the past.

WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WILL POWER

The truth about weight loss motivation does not lie with will power; it lies with the addictive refined foods we eat (more about that in a later blog) and the skills we lost when we started dieting. Our problem lies not with food but with our own attitude to it. When following a diet plan or eating regime you not only label food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but you also give up two very important skills…

1.      The Skill of Conscious Eating
2.      The Skill of Personal Choice

By listening to what foods others tell you are good for you, personal power of choice is given away. By switching off your mind to your body you close down your instinctive ability to eat exactly what your body requires and responds to well.

When dieting or trying to lose weight your focus becomes the food you believe you shouldn’t have and the outer appearance of your body. In other words you lose the skill of inner reflection, an ability to look internally to find peace and happiness rather than seeking it in external factors and expectations.

Conscious Eating is therefore not just about food, it encompass a wide variety of skills based around reflection on…

  • Your thoughts about food
  • Your thoughts about yourself
  • The effect different foods have on your body
  • How you feel when you are eating and have eaten
  • How you use food as a fuel not a comforter
  • How you love yourself

These are the skills you have lost, the many and varied habits of ‘Conscious Eating’.  The first step in regaining them is to shed your fear of food and learn to love it again. It is fear that holds you trapped in old and unhelpful habits with food. After all, if they were useful would you be struggling in a battle with food and weight after all this time? Wouldn’t you have lost the weight and kept it off easily?

Many of the Conscious Eating skills are those used by people who have never had a weight or size issue and so have never dieted. They are a rare breed that believe they are beautiful just as they are. They have no problem accepting the shape of the body they genetically inherited from their parents. They have no problem ignoring what others and society portray as the ‘perfect’ body shape. They sometimes have a wardrobe of clothes in 2 different sizes because they accept their weight fluctuation between seasons. They may even have no problem accepting a change in shape and size, as they get older. These are the people you can learn a great deal from about Conscious Eating. They hold many of the keys of how you regain control and power over the food you eat, and how to eat to live rather than live to eat.
