HOW IMAGINED UGLINESS INHIBITS WEIGHT LOSS THROUGH BODY DYSMORPHIA

Only 4% of women genetically have the ‘ideal’ body currently presented by the media. Constantly bombarded by these images, it is no wonder that 80% of women are dissatisfied with their appearance. 20 years ago the average model weighted 8% less than the average woman but today’s models weigh 23% less!

Body Dysmorphia or, imagined ugliness, is a disorder that now permeates our society. Most women who diet and achieve their target weight still hate their body!  This stops them from finding long-term happiness and joy when they achieve their weight loss goal. The stress created by the imagined ugliness only leads to increased comfort eating, unhappiness and weight gain.

To achieve successful long-term weight loss, a woman needs to learn how to befriend her body and ‘love the skin she is in’. However to do this she must:

~        Learn to ignore the cultural and media messages that imply she is not ‘Good Enough’

~        Accept the body shape that is genetically programmed within her

Understand that if she loves her body as it is right now she can learn to nourish it in a loving
way and so still lose weight

Learn to love each part of her body – even the wobbly bits

Learn to exchange her negative beliefs about herself for positive ones

Success of weight loss can be tinged by failure as we fight with food and our body image. The focus of the dieting game is all wrong!  Food is not the issue, but rather how we feel about ourselves. Learning to love the skin we are in aids us in our weight loss and in avoiding the perils of Body Dysmorphia.

ARE YOUR FRIENDS KEEPING YOU FAT?

Are your friends keeping you fat?

This is a very serious question to ask yourself when you are working towards discovering the weight you were born to be. One of my clients was recently telling me about some of her friends who pass very negative comments when she looses weight. In the coaching session we discussed how and why these people act this way.

Love Yourself Thin
The reality is that when you make changes to your life, weight and size some people are not happy about it. Sadly, there are those who are jealous. Then there are those who are frightened that they may lose their relationship with you when you change, because others may find you attractive.

My client was astounded at the comment passed by her friend when she challenged the negativity. Her friend said "Well there has to be someone in the group who is fat so that we can feel good about ourselves!"

It is so easy to let this type of person throw us straight back into our comfort eating to bury the very understandable emotions experienced by such a comment. That's the whole point of such a statement. It is subtally manipulative, especially as it is human nature to want to fit or be loved. However, by holding our personal power, challenging such negativity and continuing on our loving pathway to change, we may risk losing friendships and even loved ones.

Self-love is not just about making positive changes in what we chose to eat, it is also about loving ourselves enough to challenge hurtful and negative behavious that impact on us. I was so proud of my client because she held her personal power and told her friend that she really did not like what she had said. By doing this it opened up the opportunity for the other person to learn about being kind, loving and supportive.

This is what I call a 'wake up call' as it offers the other person a chance to understand you from a place of love, not jealousy or fear. It helps them understand that you are serious about your self-loving changes and offers you an opportunity to assess if the relationship is a sound and loving one. By doing this you see the person behind the mask.

When we begin to love ourselves deeply we attract into our lives those people who are also able to love us as we deserve. This may mean that we need to move away from those who do not learn anything from our appropriate challenges to their negativity. Alternatively, we may need to work hard at relationships, we do not want to lose. This is done by lovingly dispelling their fears of losing us.

The great thing about creating an amazing love affair with ourselves is the pathway of learning that is opened up to us.

Enjoy developing your love.

WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WILL POWER

The truth about weight loss motivation does not lie with will power; it lies with the addictive refined foods we eat (more about that in a later blog) and the skills we lost when we started dieting. Our problem lies not with food but with our own attitude to it. When following a diet plan or eating regime you not only label food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but you also give up two very important skills…

1.      The Skill of Conscious Eating
2.      The Skill of Personal Choice

By listening to what foods others tell you are good for you, personal power of choice is given away. By switching off your mind to your body you close down your instinctive ability to eat exactly what your body requires and responds to well.

When dieting or trying to lose weight your focus becomes the food you believe you shouldn’t have and the outer appearance of your body. In other words you lose the skill of inner reflection, an ability to look internally to find peace and happiness rather than seeking it in external factors and expectations.

Conscious Eating is therefore not just about food, it encompass a wide variety of skills based around reflection on…

  • Your thoughts about food
  • Your thoughts about yourself
  • The effect different foods have on your body
  • How you feel when you are eating and have eaten
  • How you use food as a fuel not a comforter
  • How you love yourself

These are the skills you have lost, the many and varied habits of ‘Conscious Eating’.  The first step in regaining them is to shed your fear of food and learn to love it again. It is fear that holds you trapped in old and unhelpful habits with food. After all, if they were useful would you be struggling in a battle with food and weight after all this time? Wouldn’t you have lost the weight and kept it off easily?

Many of the Conscious Eating skills are those used by people who have never had a weight or size issue and so have never dieted. They are a rare breed that believe they are beautiful just as they are. They have no problem accepting the shape of the body they genetically inherited from their parents. They have no problem ignoring what others and society portray as the ‘perfect’ body shape. They sometimes have a wardrobe of clothes in 2 different sizes because they accept their weight fluctuation between seasons. They may even have no problem accepting a change in shape and size, as they get older. These are the people you can learn a great deal from about Conscious Eating. They hold many of the keys of how you regain control and power over the food you eat, and how to eat to live rather than live to eat.
