HOW IMAGINED UGLINESS INHIBITS WEIGHT LOSS THROUGH BODY DYSMORPHIA

Only 4% of women genetically have the ‘ideal’ body currently presented by the media. Constantly bombarded by these images, it is no wonder that 80% of women are dissatisfied with their appearance. 20 years ago the average model weighted 8% less than the average woman but today’s models weigh 23% less!

Body Dysmorphia or, imagined ugliness, is a disorder that now permeates our society. Most women who diet and achieve their target weight still hate their body!  This stops them from finding long-term happiness and joy when they achieve their weight loss goal. The stress created by the imagined ugliness only leads to increased comfort eating, unhappiness and weight gain.

To achieve successful long-term weight loss, a woman needs to learn how to befriend her body and ‘love the skin she is in’. However to do this she must:

~        Learn to ignore the cultural and media messages that imply she is not ‘Good Enough’

~        Accept the body shape that is genetically programmed within her

Understand that if she loves her body as it is right now she can learn to nourish it in a loving
way and so still lose weight

Learn to love each part of her body – even the wobbly bits

Learn to exchange her negative beliefs about herself for positive ones

Success of weight loss can be tinged by failure as we fight with food and our body image. The focus of the dieting game is all wrong!  Food is not the issue, but rather how we feel about ourselves. Learning to love the skin we are in aids us in our weight loss and in avoiding the perils of Body Dysmorphia.
